Tip: Retopologizing

Sometimes, when you create a 3d model or download one from online, you will sometimes end up with a model that has very bad topology.

Luckily, there is a very easy way for to take your existing model, and build on it to create a new model that is exactly the same or very close to it and still have correct topology. We will do this by using the 'Freefrom Polydraw' function that is built into 3ds max. For this example, we will be working with a simple cushion.

First, right click on your model and change it to an editable polygon. This won't work unless it is an editable polygon.

Once it is an editable polygon, open the 'Freeform' tab that is next to the 'Graphite Modeling Tools', then click on the Polydraw tab. In here, click ' Draw On: ' and change it to surface. Then pick the model that you are going to be retopologizing. Then click on the topology tool, and click new object.

Now you can start drawing grids on the existing model. Once the grids join, they will form polygons. You can draw multiple grids at a time, and then later bridge them together. Once you have covered they whole model, you can add support edges (which are discussed in my previous tutorial) and a turbo smooth modifier to get a model with clean topology and less polygons.

Once you have finished creating grids, right click to exit the topology tool. Then you can go into edge mode and bridge the gaps together. As you can see, this process can get tricky and frustrating but it is worth it! Look below to see the before and the after of this process.

Medieval Knife Tutorial

This is a 6 part tutorial and covers the creation and the texturing of a very old knife that seems to be Egyptian. It covers topics such as uvw unwrapping, creating realistic photoshop textures, and how to model an object using reference images. Enjoy!

Thanks for viewing this tutorial and if you liked it and learned a thing or two, please inform as many people as you can. Remember, new tutorials and tips are released weekly on every Monday so stay tuned. Sorry but project files can't be added for this tutorial but they will be added for future ones.

Introduction to the Blog

Hey everyone, I made this blog for the purpose of posting my personal work on as well as tutorials, tips, and DIY tricks that you guys can use for free. There will be new content released weekly that I have planned for 3 months. After that time period, I will be taking requests from you guys and will start posting tutorials and tips using your ideas. Remember to tell your friends and family about this blog and try to spread it as much as possible. The programs that I will be using are 3ds Max, Adobe After Effects, and Photoshop. These are the main programs but I will use odds and ends of other programs. I will kick it off by posting a tutorial on how to create a Medieval /Egyptian Dagger in 3ds Max next Monday. Stay tuned!
